The Road-Going 917: A Dare That Changed Everything<\/strong>  <\/h2>\n\n\n\n

On April 28, 1975, a one-of-a-kind Porsche 917 left the Weissach development center. Unlike its predecessors, this 917 wasn\u2019t headed to a racetrack. Instead, it pointed toward public roads, a concept almost unthinkable then. What began as a daring experiment ended in Paris, hundreds of miles away, after a spirited road trip that would become a legend.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

This wasn\u2019t just 917. Chassis 30 had seen track duty but was transformed into something never seen before: a street-legal endurance racer. This modification wasn\u2019t for mass production or corporate publicity but for a private customer with a clear vision. Gregorio Rossi di Montelera, also known as Count Rossi, was no ordinary enthusiast. He was a powerboat racer, a bobsledder, and a Porsche devotee with an appetite for the extraordinary.  <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Martini Silver, Paris Bound<\/strong>  <\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Count Rossi\u2019s request led to what many consider one of the boldest engineering feats in the Porsche brand\u2019s history. Finished in Martini Silver and outfitted with features required by road law, the car wore rudimentary mufflers, side mirrors, indicators, and even a horn. A spare tire was tucked beneath the rear clamshell, meeting another requirement.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Inside, the transformation was equally thoughtful. The 917 racing roots weren\u2019t erased; they were paired with a touch of elegance. Both seats, originally mandated by endurance racing rules, were re-covered in tan leather supplied by Herm\u00e8s. The suede-lined interior added refinement, while the wooden gear knob and lightweight drilled key preserved its motorsport soul.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Despite some restoration work, its original paint and interior have been carefully preserved, allowing history to live and breathe through its bodywork and cabin.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n
