Ducktails of the Porsche 911 Carrera RS models

Know What the Porsche 911’s Ducktail Can Do!

What are the Benefits of the Ducktail, a part of the Porsche 911?

Porsche models come with exquisite aerodynamic exterior styling that is specific to enhance performance. One widely discussed external element is the legendary ducktail structure of the Porsche 911 series, which first appeared in the unique Porsche 911 Carrera RS 2.7. At Porsche of Colorado Springs in Colorado Springs, CO, we have information on the benefits of this ducktail and how it makes the Porsche 911 models maintain its astounding performance on track or road. Keep reading to learn more.

How does the Ducktail help in the Porsche 911 models’ performance?

A common word for the back of a waddling waterfowl, ducktail, the wedge-shaped structure on the tailgate of the Porsche 911 Carrera RS 2.7 raised eyebrows back then. The Ducktail is an addition to the tailgate of the vehicle that is very much like a wing, flat underneath and curved at the top, tapering towards the back of it. The intention was to create a lift during high-speed cornering, which the then critics considered not necessary, as too much lift would hinder the performance of the vehicle during high-speed accelerations. But the wind tunnel experiment proved otherwise, which silenced all the critics.

Driving through the wind tunnel revealed that the lift coefficient increased at the vehicle’s rear, figured at 0.29 CL. Hence, experts employed a gurney flap made with a welding wire and thin sheet metal to the ducktail that reduced two-thirds of the coefficient at 0.08CL, which improved the drag aerodynamic coefficient value. An increase in the drag coefficient value meant more speed, from 2.8 mph to 149 mph, which was a breakthrough improvement.
